"Nick Etre was born in Albuquerque, NM and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received his BFA from New York University with a focus in painting, video, and installation. He explores interconnectivity, contagious behavior, perception, and metaphysical oneness. Etre challenges the romantic mythology of the artist by creating mixed-media compositions that combine the handmade with manufactured and found objects to examine the value of originality versus facsimile. Etre’s studio practice is dependent on chance, fortuity, and failure. The ability to highlight and recognize these serendipitous moments becomes his strong suit. He investigates repetitive behavior trends throughout history as a means of revealing internal and external truth, a truth unbound by time. What his paintings often communicate is immediacy, speaking directly to the viewer and forcing interaction. The paintings forgo formal representation and traditional technique in order to explore abstraction and composition as a tool to reveal narrative. Through the deconstruction of images, he builds a conversation that pushes us past both logic and reason, to a state of elevated emotional feeling. He has shown with the Bruce High Quality Foundation, Violet’s Cafe, and the St. Patrick Old Cathedral School in New York, Scharinska Villan in Umea, Sweden, and Halfspace Gallery in Philadelphia, PA."
