The Archive as a Resource for Artists

Swiss Artist Denise Bertschi discusses her interest in the Getty Research Institute’s Harald Szeemann Archive. On occasion of their summer research residency at the GRI, they will talk about the archive's function in complicating the distincion between curatorial research and art making.

Pietro Rigolo, Assistant Curator for Modern and Contemporary Collections at the Getty Research Institute, Saida Largaespada archivist at Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) and Hailey Loman, Co-Founder and Director of Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), will also be joining the discussion. The evening will be moderated by Nicola Ruffo, Head of Public Programs at swissnex San Francisco, a Swiss organization, based in the Bay Area, connecting science, art and technology.

Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) is beginning a new conversation series titled, Common Ground, bringing together artists and scholars with seemingly disparate disciplines and backgrounds in and outside of the arts. This is an invitation to expand upon research similarities, find shared meaning, and enter into “common ground.”

Common Ground is free and open to the public. Recordings will be made available after each talk.

At LACA: Una Noche: Corriente Alterna

Una Noche: Corriente Alterna brings together work by a group of Los Angeles-born and raised Latinx-Xicanx artists, illustrators, and researchers, invited by LACA to experiment with collectivity and fugitivity to contribute to new forms of cultural imagery. The group consists of Geani Sanabria, Yair Sarmiento, Rosalinda Meza, Aaron Edmundo, Ezequiel Olvera, Pablo Fernando, Andrew Freire, Efren Landeros, and Eduardo Robles.

RECITAL! will debut the Sewnata Machine, a sewing machine that generates various sounds through its connection to different effects pedals, allowing for sound manipulation in real time. The basis of this performance is the durational act of sewing live in front of an audience; sewing is a [feminized] domestic work that is not often seen in the public eye - especially not as a noise machine.

The Double, Shadow, and Enemy pt. II (The Notebook Episode)

“This is the living room edition. It’s the notebook episode. This is where things get personal.”

Matilda Tjäder presents a new performance in the wishing for more cycle; a performance series by a fictive entrepreneur whose subjective form is increasingly fragmented by continuous transformation. Learning and un-learning from its environment, its subjectivity—like water—flows, seduces, and breaks. A void opens onto another zone in which a new map is drawn, “but remember, the map is not the territory.” Taking place in the midst of sound and visuals, each episode draws from its site-specificity whilst rendering the invisible visible. With a bouquet of nettles, Tjäder welcomes you to her chamber. The performance is the culmination of her residency at LACA (Los Angeles Contemporary Archive) this April and a reiteration of a recent performance shown at The Geffen Contemporary, during the LAABF 2019.
