Scott Benzel works across a variety of media, often incorporating a broad spectrum of pre-existing cultural materials, reframing and recontextualizing objects and ideas to create new resonances and assemblages. The installation, “ISBN-978-0-9913772-9-6,” is an outgrowth or reverse ekphrasis of Benzel’s book project of the same name, comprised of reviews of his work and publicity materials rewritten as “blank verse,” the poetic form of Coleridge’s The Aeolian Harp and much of Shakespeare. The current work “unfolds” the “enfolded” works and texts, combining the “poems” with their objects of reference, examining the interaction of text, object, and form, and issues of publicity and visibility in art’s production, distribution, and reception.
