Momma Tried Issue 3 is the midpoint of a five part project examining 20th century media’s decline in the 21st century, marking a critical transition in the narrative arc of the magazine. Beginning with Issue 3, Momma (the magazine itself) has become sentient and is now aware of her own mortality as a print object, and in an effort to resist obsolescence and death she has begun to turn herself into a cyborg. Taking influence from Donna Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto, Issue 3 explores themes of identity creation and identity transition, the experience of otherness, and the pursuit of autonomy.
Readers of Issue 3 can download Program Synthesis, a companion augmented reality app (free for iOS and Android) that grants them access to additional content when the physical magazine is viewed through the camera of a smartphone or tablet. These activations take the form of pages that animate, still photos that activate into video, and images on the page that trigger audio transmissions from Momma, conveying her newfound sentience.
