In the Shadow of Numbers is a collection of new writings and images by Charles Gaines. It accompanies a survey exhibition of his work at Pomona College Museum of Art and Pitzer College. Gaines investigates the relationships between aesthetic experience, political beliefs and the formation of meaning in art. Gaines identifies with John Cage’s "examinations of indeterminacy in both composition and performance." The book includes a selection of images of drawings, photographs, sculptures and videos by Gaines, spanning the course of several decades.
