Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based artist Mark Verabioff is known for distinctive conversations using word as image. Since 1985 the artist has been in a highly committed relationship with the critical interrogation of form and its social-political capabilities. His art explores his circuitous relationship between language, aesthetics and content, moving in and out of logic, absurdity, provocation and seduction. The work sutures cultural politics with the suspicious hypnosis of memory culled from a variety of sources including television, film and American popular culture. Verabioff's mutations of his intellectual gestures from his subversive past has created a captivating body of work anchored by radical formalism and the artist's own signature style. His art manifests itself in a variety of forms that challenge and seduce the viewer. Utilizing appropriation, installation, sculpture, page tears, performative-residue, performance and video, his work embodies many visual cultural insurgents that have occupied the making of art and art historical lexicon since the mid 1980s. Mark Verabioff was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1963. The artist studied Intermedia, Performance Video at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1981-1985) and The Banff Centre for the Arts (1984.) The artist's work has been featured in Artforum, C Magazine, Flash Art, Frieze, Parachute, and The New York Times.
