Arttextum with Frida Cano

Arttextum, a transdisciplinary research-based art project, was born as a response to the growing and constant crisis that we see in different layers of daily life. Its purpose is to expose changes of global paradigms following the lines of argumentation from Critical Cartography that proposes that maps produce reality instead of just representing it. Through Arttextum’s database, the project employs algorithmic metaphors to create non-geographic maps that visualize the cultural landscape by alluding to the natural landscape: artists are shown as creative rivers that flow over and modify the artistic terrain, while museums and other exhibition spaces are like mountains, lakes and valleys where these rivers circulate. As part of the talk, Arttextum will be sharing the results of it’s research (revisiting the relevance of the art venues and artists as rivers and mountains for the Latin American cultural landscape, as well as the latest interventions in Japan and Mexico City, that links various regions from the Ring of Fire of the Pacific Ocean, such as Mexico City, Japan and Los Angeles).
Frida Cano (Mexico, 1982)
Artist & curator. Bachelor of Fine Arts by Enpeg la Esmeralda (2000-2005) and Master of Arts (Exhibition and Museum Studies) by the San Francisco Art Institute, usa (2009-2011); some recent complementary studies include “Curating on the web”, Node Center for Curatorial Studies, Berlín, 2015; “cartographic practices in contemporary art”, Taller Multinacional, Mexico, 2015; “contemporary art from latin america”, Cenart, Mexico, 2017. Her work as an artist and as a curator has been exhibited in México, USA, Spain, Germany, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Japan and China, as art shows, public talks, publications and congresses of philosophy, science, technology, art and society. With a strong emphasis on the construction of the idea of “Latin America” from and beyond its geo- political boundaries, her current art project entitled arttextum, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Spain, the artist proposes a revision of the art generated from a generation born at the end of the las dictatorships and right before the boom of the internet. Cano, along with her team of collaborators, maps the artworks that were inspired from the contexts of the third world and analyze them to re- insert them in the “third environment” (internet). As a cultural producer, cano’s work is influenced by the artwork of artists pablo helguera and alfredo jaar, of the curatorial work of hou hanru and cuauhtémoc medina, and from the ideologies of intellectuals like octavio paz, humberto eco and slavoj zizek. Frida has been a fundación/colección Jumex Scholar (2009-2011), SFAI (2009-2011), onca scholar (2010-2011), beca endesa/fundación duques de soria scholar (2012-2013), and was selected for the fulbright scholarship. She has published numerous times in various journals, such as interartive magazine (about art and the new media in latin america), Mexico (2016), discurso visual magazine, Mexico (2015), and many more. Her work experience includes Kurimanzutto Gallery (2005-2008), Centro de la Imagen Museum (2008-2009), Walter and Mcbean Galleries, usa (2009-2011), Sayago & Pardon/space collection, USA (2013-2015), and currently the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, Madrid, Spain (since 2012 to date).
Maite Muñoz Iglesias (Badajoz, Spain, 1981)
During my professional career, I have developed a deep interest in contemporary art, with special attention to the use of underground artists’ publications as a means of expression and the exploration of the political, technological and cultural dimensions of the archive. Currently living between Los Angeles and Barcelona, where I develop projects as a researcher and independent curator. I’m also a member of the collective of Vista Oral, with which I manage the exhibition space 56x45x25. I’m also a member of the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) team. I’m working as an external advisor and independent curator for the Archive of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and for Fundación YAXS (Ciudad de Guatemala) and for the project Archive of Archives of the artist Antoni Muntadas.
Bachelor of Fine Arts by Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche. Master in Design and Communication by Universitat Politecnica de Valencia. Master in Curating Art and New Media by Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Team member of the MACBA Study Center (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona) since 2008, where since 2012 to the end of 2015 I worked as Head of Archive. I have curated the exhibition and seminar about artists’ publications Whole, In Part (MUSAC, León, 2013), the publication See you later (Sant Andreu Contemporani, Barcelona, 2015), the exhibition A.XMI. Xavier Miserachs Archive (MACBA, Barcelona, 2015) and the exhibitions Sampler #1: Documents on the Stage (MACBA, 2017) and Sampler #2: This is Mail Art (MACBA, 2017).

Arttextum, proyecto transdisciplinario de arte e investigación, nació como una respuesta a la creciente y constante crisis que se ve en diversos aspectos de la vida diaria, y propone cambios de paradigma globales siguiendo las líneas de argumentación de la Cartografía Crítica que propone que los mapas producen la realidad en vez de sólo representarla. A través de su base de datos, el proyecto emplea metáforas algorítmicas para crear mapas nogeográficos que visualizan el paisaje cultural aludiendo a elementos del paisaje natural: los artistas se visualizan como los ríos creativos que fluyen y modifican a su paso el paisaje cultural, y los museos y espacios de exhibición son como las montañas, lagos y valles por donde circulan estos ríos. Como parte de la charla, Arttextum estará compartiendo los resultados de su investigación (realizando una revisión de los sitios y agentes culturales más relevantes para este paisaje cultural latinoamericano, así como las últimas intervenciones realizadas en Japón y ciudad de México, las cuales ligan distintos lugares del Cinturón de Fuego del Pacífico, como la ciudad de México, Japón y Los Ángeles).

Licenciada en artes plásticas por la enpeg la esmeralda (2000-2005) y maestra en artes con especialidad en estudios de exhibiciones y museos por el san francisco art institute, usa (2009-2011); algunos estudios complementarios recientes son los cursos “Curating on the web”, node center for curatorial studies, berlín, 2015; “Prácticas cartográficas en el arte contemporáneo”, taller multinacional, méxico, 2015; “Arte contemporáneo y actual desde américa latina”, cenart, méxico, 2017. Su trabajo como artista y curadora se ha mostrado principalmente en méxico, estados unidos, españa, alemania, guatemala, costa rica, japón y china, a través de exposiciones de arte, conversatorios, ejercicios curatoriales, publicaciones y en ponencias de congresos sobre filosofía, ciencia, tecnología, arte y sociedad, con un enfoque evidente sobre el ejercicio crítico para la construcción de la idea de latinoamérica desde y por fuera de las fronteras geo-políticas y culturales. Titulado “Arttextum, tejido de agentes culturales inspirados en latinoamérica”, en colaboración con el ministerio de cultura español, propone una revisión del arte de la generación de artistas visuales nacidos al término o durante las últimas dictaduras latinoamericanas y previo al boom global del internet. La artista junto a su equipo de colaboradores mapean obras gestadas desde contextos de crisis del tercer mundo y las analizan para re-insertarlas en el tercer entorno (internet). Su labor como productora cultural se ha visto influenciada por la obra de los artistas pablo helguera y alfredo jaar, por el trabajo curatorial de hou hanru y de cuauhtémoc medina, así como por la ideología de intelectuales como octavio paz, humberto eco y slavoj zizek. Ha sido beneficiaria de la fundación/colección jumex (2009-2011), sfai (2009-2011), fonca (2010-2011), beca endesa/fundación duques de soria (2012- 2013), seleccionada fulbright-garcía robles comexus y ha publicado en la revista digital interartive sobre arte y nuevos medios en américa latina, méxico (2016), revista discurso visual, españa (2015), y más.
