Dump Site: trash drop-off day

Dump Site is a public repository of files pulled from trash folders and the recently deleted. We invite you to join us for Dump Site’s first trash drop-off day and group keyword tagging session in Los Angeles.

The stewards of Dump Site will offer a presentation to introduce the project, and invite you to bring your computer to dig through and discuss your own digital trash afterwards. Exploring memory through the lens of discard, this virtual landfill points a sentimental gaze towards desktop debris.

Participants will hear about the points of research and core questions that shaped the project. How does collecting trash celebrate the role of mess and fiction in archival practice? What is the archaeological significance of digital trash? Bring a laptop and a charger. Several computers will be made available on site.

REDCAT and Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) are thrilled to share a writing workshop led by artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed. In this workshop, participants will write in the shape of their surroundings, and build language inflected by objects, architectures, their environments, and their anecdotal memory of the past.

How can you remain connected to a place that you cannot go to?

Modified from a long tradition, Hekmat Shikwana creates beads from fruit and olive pits as a reminder of returning to a past home in Alqosh, Iraq. The embellished pits and seeds are created with nail polish, text, and other found materials.

beads, a vitrine exhibition at LACA opening Saturday, February 24 at 7pm, features a small fraction of the beads Shikwana has made over the course of his life, and pairs them with writing from his daughter, Maia Asshaq.

beads, remind us, home can be the physicality of your own body, the muscle in your hand that develops like that of your father’s hand. For Hekmat and Maia, closeness comes in spite of the difference in their languages and lives.

For Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living, LACA has created break room, an installation which serves as a public rest area remixed and reshuffled with archival collections. Break room explores how mandated rest time is not for our own recovery. Archival selections here demonstrate how we rupture, break, and temporarily refuse the oppressive conditions imposed on us.

The collection features artists’ live/work conditions, placemaking and collective actions through notes, costume apparel, police reports, nuisance complaints, playlists, group text messages, child care leave requests, love letters, maps to raves, and performance plan sketches. The collections show complicated artistic lives and the ways in which we dream up possibilities of living differently.

“What does it mean for a painter to think?” – Hubert Damish

The hedge is perfectly manicured, the expensive-looking wood planters a shade somewhere between bourgeois respectability and denuded avant-garde. The finishes, materials, and layout suggest refinement, a mashup of ozempaic Hollywood Regency and clear-cut mid-century Modern – this is the lobby of a luxury building. The penthouse, having slashed through all of that intervening “immaterial” matter (the floors separating the lobby from the penthouse significant only in their elevatory capacity), sits directly atop the lobby, floor-to-ceiling windows framing a fiery sunset cresting the megapolis. Next door – another aberration in the heartland of this real – a destroyed room, twisted furniture smashed into its center as if spontaneously sucked into one of the pocket black holes that scientists have recently warned permeate our universe.
