Please join Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) November 21st, 12-4pm for Molly Surazhsky’s new book Mashacare: Home of the Freaks, Misfits, & Weirdoes.

LACA is pleased to release Mashacare: Home of the Freaks, Misfits, & Weirdoes. This Lookbook draws upon the Mashacare SS19 Collection and uses sci-fi narratives to construct an imaginary floating city named after Surazhsky’s Babushka, Masha. Surazhsky has created and fashioned clothing for Mashacare, a post-glacial future, as a way to envision the inhabitants of a matriarchal and post-capitalist reality.

Summer Residency 2020

This residency examines the ways in which a tangible exchange of objects and papers serves as physical representation of my grandmother’s form of preserving memory and legacy. With the accumulation of these materials, resulting in one archival facet of a multi-tiered exploration of story telling, contextualization and reception, I’m thinking and writing through the space that personal archives maintain between history and memory. The result is an amassing of information that speaks towards personal history in the form of a self-reflecting testimonial.

While LACA stays at home [during the Covid-19 pandemic], we are developing a new collection, Live/Work: Artist Studio and Housing Collection. This project invites artists to share ephemera directly related to artist studio and housing issues. Our goal is to contextualize art-making within what is typically seen as an inconsequential site of production.

If you would like to participate in this collection, please share your materials. We are currently gathering: studio leases, mortgages, residencies, contracts, sublet negotiations, or verbal agreements for the rental, home, and studio agreements.

The Archive as a Resource for Artists

Swiss Artist Denise Bertschi discusses her interest in the Getty Research Institute’s Harald Szeemann Archive. On occasion of their summer research residency at the GRI, they will talk about the archive's function in complicating the distincion between curatorial research and art making.

Pietro Rigolo, Assistant Curator for Modern and Contemporary Collections at the Getty Research Institute, Saida Largaespada archivist at Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) and Hailey Loman, Co-Founder and Director of Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), will also be joining the discussion. The evening will be moderated by Nicola Ruffo, Head of Public Programs at swissnex San Francisco, a Swiss organization, based in the Bay Area, connecting science, art and technology.

Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) is beginning a new conversation series titled, Common Ground, bringing together artists and scholars with seemingly disparate disciplines and backgrounds in and outside of the arts. This is an invitation to expand upon research similarities, find shared meaning, and enter into “common ground.”

Common Ground is free and open to the public. Recordings will be made available after each talk.
