If not home focuses on the idea of connecting to a place that no longer exists. Not physically, per se, but the consideration that a place changes over time; that environments change. Altered by the passage of time itself; by people, by politics, and other factors. No place is really as you left it.

This exhibition features a small fraction of the beads Shikwana has made over the course of his life, and pairs them with writing from Asshaq.

Private Practices: AAPI Artist and Sex Worker Collection

LACA has initiated Private Practices with curator Coco Ono, co-producer of Sacred Wounds, which highlights healing-focused celebrations of Asian perspectives through erotic ritual. The archive that LACA and Ono have established is a living collection, meaning that items—such as screenshots, paystubs, apparel, set pieces, police reports, text messages, and other ephemera pertinent to sexual labor—will be added on an ongoing basis. The contributors to this collection have actively described the materials in this archive by cataloguing and entering their own keywords; therefore, they play an active role in shaping the narrative of the holdings and the collection as a whole.

Unlike past holidays at Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), this year we are unable to all be together. So, we’re considering different ways of being close.
21 Minute Mix brings together mixes by artists, musicians, archivists, and DJs, to assemble songs of love and longing to share with others.
The mix will go LIVE February 14th 8PM PST on LACA’s Vimeo and be available on LACA’s online database thereafter.

Los Angeles Contemporary Archive and Commonwealth and Council invite you to an artist archive case study, a tour and conversation surrounding the exhibition, Box (a proposition for ten years). The presentation will feature artist Patricia Fernández, artist and archivist Hailey Loman, curator and archivist Maite Muñoz, and writer and art historian Doris Chon and be followed by a Q&A.

The participants will consider where the act of archiving overlaps with the authorship of artwork. How does someone archive a relationship—with a space, with a friend—through an exchange of objects, unanswered letters, and things left unspoken?
